the drugs 'n guns neighbors strike again
this evening, my fabulous neighbors invited me over for tacos and conversation. you will be pleased to know that no drugs were ingested, since we got onto the subject of firearms and Warren, like any good gun owner, was compelled to bring his out and show them to me. now, Warren is a prize-winning marksman, and he takes great pride in his guns. so i got to handle a Colt Python, which is an even larger and more impressive gun than i had imagined (no, seriously, it's really fucking big!), and a very snazzy .22 target pistol (i forget the manufacturer) that he assures me has no recoil at all and is an absolute pleasure to fire. he also showed me his .22 rifle and his two Walther air pistols, but he didn't want to dig out the high-powered rifle because it was buried in the back of the closet behind the bear head.
yes, there's a bear head. sorry, vegetarians. however, he assures me that he hasn't hunted for years and doesn't care to ever do so again.
he encouraged me to look through the scope of the .22 rifle. from well inside the apartment (it seemed imprudent to be hanging over the balcony with it), i'm thinking a good marksman such as Warren could take someone out anywhere in the neighborhood with a scope like that. so if there are ever news stories about a Pacifica sniper, i know exactly where to look.
anyway, despite my general terror of firearms, he convinced me to go shooting with them sometime and be taught to shoot properly, starting with an appropriately small weapon. i have my doubts that i'm ever going to feel safe around guns, but i figure it can't hurt.
so it was a fun evening. i talked up Perez-Reverte to Shirley and ended up lending her one of his books (i thought i'd start her on "The Fencing Master"), which i think she'll enjoy. we had some discussion of plants, of course. and now i am home, and the cats are wanting my attention. so cruel of me, to leave them alone for three whole hours! clearly reparations must be made.
