Expect the unexpected

Some of you may remember that back when I lived in Charlotte, I had a friend named Mike, better known to Usenet as "Mike the Homeless Guitarist". At the time I met him he was living out of a 70s vintage Monte Carlo left to him by his grandmother, and he spent some time on my couch as well before I left for the west coast. I even got a halfway decent song out of him.

However, we lost touch once I got to California, and it's hard to track down an itinerant musician from 3000 miles away. Still, I held out hope that he'd get on the net one day and I'd stumble across him.

Instead, he stumbled across me while looking at reviews for Dunlop nylon picks at Amazon.com. I got an email from him, I gave him a call, and I think we talked for something like 4 hours straight. Which is just the way it was before -- he and I never seemed to run out of things to talk about.

He's in Colorado now, and still delivering pizzas, but for a while he also ran a blog about guns, which is pretty interesting reading unless you're rabidly anti-gun, in which case you should probably give it a miss. Mike is not rabidly anti-gun, as demonstrated by the time I came home to find him pacing my living room, shirtless, with a guitar in his arms and a gun in his pants. (And no, it wasn't particularly happy to see me. Or particularly unhappy. As far as I know, the gun remained entirely neutral where I was concerned.) (Note also that Mike is a lot more conservative than... well... any of y'all. Rest assured, however, that he's not a dick about it.)

Anyway, the point of all this is that it's a very fine thing to reconnect with old friends. I hadn't seen or heard from Mike in almost 15 years, and we picked up right where we left off. I offer this by way of example. We all know how shitty I am about keeping in touch with people, but do not assume that because you haven't heard from me, that I've forgotten about you. I don't just go around forgetting people. Shit, I'm still hoping to hear from Kevin, AKA PsychoCop, with whom I last communicated 20 years ago. (You know, Kevin and Mike really need to meet each other someday, now that I think about it.)

Somewhere I've got a couple of pictures of Mike from back in Charlotte. If I can track them down, I'll scan them and put them online so he can grab his head and complain about how OLD he is.
