i'm working on writingtable.com again, now that i have to start job-hunting, and i'm having a hard time figuring out what to write on the front page. i thought i could get some ideas by looking at similar sites.

spot the mistake in the first paragraph of this guy's site, and win nothing but a sense of sheer amazement that he gets any work at all. and my god, could the bold italics be any tackier?

here's another one with a mistake (and some just plain bad writing) on the front page.

here's a guy with a broken graphic on his poorly laid out site, and not even a link to his resume.

i'm not even sure what to say about this.

good lord. my competitors are idiots.

i'm fucked if i can come up with a decent opening sentence for the front page of my site. i know what i need to say, and i can even figure out how to say most of it... but how do i begin? "Hi, I'm a tech writer" lacks a certain dignity. i'll do anything to avoid the heinousness of "Welcome to my site." it'd all sound a lot more dignified if i were talking about myself as a corporate entity rather than as a person, but i really don't want to get into the complicated business crap that comes with doing things that way.

there's a reason i'm not a marketing writer, you know. perhaps i should hire another writer to write my website copy?

it turns out it really is possible to be too concise.
