the old chick and the sea
Nov. 8th, 2002 06:31 pmi went out this afternoon to take pictures of the surf. my digital camera malfunctioned, so i only got two shots, but i took a whole roll of slide film. we'll see how that comes out. i am very relieved to report that no water got inside either camera when i got knocked on my ass by a wave that came over the seawall -- alas, however, i didn't have the presence of mind to click the shutter while i was falling down. would've been an awesome shot.
note to self: when wearing waterproof jacket and photographing large waves, zip the jacket next time.
i'm really not much of a photographer; i have a poor sense of composition, not to mention a hard time keeping my hands from shaking. still, i took what i hope will be some neat shots of rusted and torn-apart railings and crumbling seawall as well as the ocean. i also took a shot of a woman who was taking her toddler (in a bright red parka) and her golden retriever for a walk by the seawall, and if it comes out it's going to be supercute.
of course, all this assumes that the salt water all over the lens didn't wreck the last 8 or 9 shots.
before i went home for my camera, i had lunch in a Szechuan place just off 19th street in which i was the only white person eating. i got to share a communal table with many non-english-speaking people and had soup, tea, and two meals worth of pretty decent kung pao chicken (i brought half home) for $3.84. kludge would love this place. the busboy was scurrying around singing in (i think) Mandarin, which was pretty nifty too. and a little while later, when i went to Little Pnomh Penh (the best local donut place) for a latte while i was waiting for prescriptions, i got to listen to the woman behind the counter singing along with jazz on the radio. i guess it was just a singing kind of day.
other interesting things seen today: a theater sign advertising "MY BI FAT GREEK WEDDING" and the coolest treehouse/fort i've ever seen in my life; i will go back soon with my digital camera and try to get pictures of it. it has a turret with a shingled roof and wings going off in all directions and random objects nailed to the walls and is just so neat i want to be a kid again just so i can play in it.
