wonderful, wonderful, and most wonderful
Mar. 6th, 2004 04:03 pmit's an absolutely glorious day, and i have taken full advantage of it.
first, Shirley and i went to the farmer's market out at Alemany, and had a great time. i got Chinese leeks, some fingerling potatoes that are more like handlings, sage honey, cilantro, blood oranges, some Napa Valley champagne vinegar, and most exciting of all, some exotic mushrooms. the seller called them abalone mushrooms, but according to web searches, that's just another name for oyster mushrooms, which these are not.
i'm not sure what they are -- an hour of websurfing has proved largely fruitless, although i do see some similarity to the gamboni or big leg mushrooms shown on this page. they smell and taste a bit fruity, raw, and i'm told they lose very little size or texture when cooked. i'm looking forward to experimenting!
when we got back to my place, i suddenly realized i'd forgotten my therapy appointment, but i made it only five minutes late. all the way home i couldn't stop noticing interesting or beautiful things -- the way the shadow of the building numbers painted on the glass transom at the shrink's office cast numeric shadows on the stairwell wall. 19th avenue fascinates me, because every time i drive down it i see another cool house i'd never noticed before. the california poppies are in bloom everywhere, vivid orange blossoms sprouting up from arid traffic islands, between the Muni rails, on median strips.
i gave all my change to a panhandler at 19th and Sloat whose sign said "CONSIDERING RUNNING FOR PRESIDENT, BUT A LITTLE SHORT ON CAMPAIGN FUNDS."
tonight i'm going to rent "A Quest for Fire" because i've been re-reading "The Neandertal Enigma" and now i've got a bug up my butt about it. and now i have to go give Warren a lift back to pick up their car. i've invited them to come by this evening for beers and conversation, which is a good incentive for me to clean up the bathroom and take out the trash.
daffodils are 99 cents a bunch at Trader Joe's. grab 'em while they last!
