today i stopped by the Bed Bath & Beyond store hoping to find some good vegetable storage containers, since i was feeling too lazy to go into the city for the Container Store. i didn't find any. what i did find was three complete place settings of my discontinued flatware pattern on clearance for $12.45 a set. so i bought them all, because what else could i possibly do? i think i've got complete service for six now plus some extra forks and knives, and not counting the serving set that i stupidly didn't buy. but it makes me happy. i absolutely love this flatware pattern. not only does it have a cool spiraly design on the ends, it's very high quality stainless and has a good weight and balance to it. everything tastes better when you eat it with nice utensils. or at least that's my story and i'm sticking to it.

i hit the Pacific Super next for some young ginger, thai chilies, and fresh bamboo shoots. i also picked up a packet of chicken and corn soup mix into which one stirs an egg before serving. it's full of chemicals so i'm sure it will be delicious. i also succumbed to the lure of young coconut and lychee ice cream. Filipino-style ice cream is interesting stuff... unlike western ice creams, it has no vanilla in it, so it basically tastes like fruit and cream. very, very yummy. it comes in interesting flavors -- mango, purple yam (much better than it sounds), and the one i'm too afraid to try: corn and cheese flavor. i'm sorry, but that's just wrong.

tonight i'm going to make my own version of chinese "orange chicken" -- i don't bread the chicken, so it's much lighter, and i add some julienned carrot for variety. boneless skinless chicken breast is $2 less/pound at the PS than at the other groceries in the area, and the breasts aren't the monstrously sized ones you see in the American supermarket chains. i can't even eat a whole one of those things.

one day i hope someone will tell me the secret of julienning vegetables without spending an hour with the knife. not that i mind. this is a good fuss-in-the-kitchen sort of day.

the bastards in the rental office assigned us all different parking spaces than we used to have, and my new one is way in the back where it's all dark. on the other hand, i've got a lot more room to get out of my car now that i'm not parking next to the wall.

my life is so exciting. it's a wonder people aren't lined up at the door begging for a chance to spend a day in my shoes.
