the notebook
Dec. 17th, 2006 12:07 pmthis is kind of a long shot, but i know my friends are packrats... have any of you out there got a spare XP laptop you could loan me until i can afford something usable? since most of the available work around here at the moment seems to be contract stuff, i really need a working laptop with network capability.
unfortunately, the only laptop i have working is an 8-year-old Acer 501DX running Win98 (not even SE), which has no battery, is held together by duct tape, and is so archaic that it's impossible to find a wireless card it supports that will work with a modern network. it has a floppy (which is, of course, useless at this point) and a CD drive, but no burner, so the only way to transfer files back and forth is with a USB drive -- some of which, it turns out, have no compatible drivers. it's also missing the "I" key. it's perfectly adequate for writing and playing Angband, but not much use for serious work. (it looks totally punk rock, though.)
it does need to be an XP machine; with apologies to the Mac weenies amongst you, i need to be able to run FrameMaker. i'm not really expecting to get lucky, but i figured it couldn't hurt to ask.
