i am duly installed in the new place, thanks to a larger crew of helpers than i think i've ever had before for a move; with our convoy of five vehicles, the whole move took about two hours from load-in to load-out. cable (and thus internet) are now up and running, although the gas still isn't thanks to a fuckup on their end. hopefully i'll have some way of cooking by dinnertime tomorrow. in the meantime, there's always pizza.

the place is in dire need of some minor repairs that i'm planning to do most of myself, rather than waiting for my permabaked landlord to get around to them. i asked him about it and he seemed perfectly comfortable with my making improvements to the place. (go figure.) so i bought a new light fixture for the dining room at Ikea (hey, for $4, who cares if i like it? it's not only less hideous than the current one, it's also not a fire hazard or an obstacle to be dodged.)

i'm going to have to find a way to secure the screens so the cats can't push them out. the refrigerator and stove are ancient and crufty. the light fixture in the kitchen needs full-spectrum fluorescent tubes, new, non-yellow plastic, and for the wooden grate that holds the plastic up to be more securely attached to the ceiling. the ceiling fan in the bedroom needs a glass shade for its bare light bulb. the mirror in the bathroom is losing its silvering at the bottom, there's no drain plug in the sink, and i needed pliers to get the shower going this morning. oh, and the kitchen and bathroom are both in dire need of thorough cleaning, because they're filthy.

on the up side, it's quiet, the windowsills are wide enough to make good cat perches, the carpet is both new and non-hideous, the bedroom closet has built in storage, there's enough shade to keep it from getting hotter inside than it is outside, and one of my neighbors has a hand-stenciled slogan on his van that reads, "GET IN THE VAN, I'M A FRIEND OF YOUR MOTHER'S."

oh yeah, and it's really cheap and i can smell the coffee roasting at Ruta Maya.

i know i've been reading too much Weiss Kreuz fanfic, because i keep wanting to say, "ficken sie deutsch?"

addendum, 04/04: i can't believe nobody's followed this up with "FUCK AMERICAN!"
