i've written a lot of songs about a lot of people over the years, but until now, no one's ever written one about me. i don't really know what to say except that i'm incredibly touched by this. thank you, [livejournal.com profile] avahgdu, for the wonderful song.

I LIVE!

...barely. depression blah blah nonfunctional blah blah etc.

i need to work out how long i can leave the fridge unplugged without my milk spoiling, since that's about how long i'll be able to record at a stretch. my brother (with whom i have never, ever played music before) and i are trying to do some long-distance collaboration, which i'm actually about as psyched about as it's possible for me to be.

admittedly, that isn't saying much in my current state, but i did manage to pull sufficiently out of my torpor to hook up the mixer and do a test run in the astonishing space of only three days. (this involved opening a suitcase, finding two adapters, and hooking up three cables. i know! i'm practically a SPEED DEMON!)

or was it four days? i lose track of time a lot. and i'm pretty sure i haven't eaten today, so i should probably do that.

i desperately need someone to drag me out of the house for a bit. (note: may require actual physical dragging.)

soup's on!

i've finally finished the lyrics for that song i was working on a few weeks ago, and i'm pretty happy with them overall. the melody for the verses needs some work, and i'd like to do a little more with the chord progression, but it is, essentially, a complete song.

update, 12 hours later: i decided the chorus was too repetitive, so i've written a variation for the third repetition.

in case you were wondering, this tab is totally, totally wrong.
  • all those A's should be Am's

  • said Am's should be replaced with C's in the intro riff and in the riff that comes at the end of each line

  • the chord for the fifth line of the chorus is a modified C: 3x2010

  • the sixth line of the chorus looks like this:
    F G F G
There's been a change of heart

but instead of barring the F and G here, play the F like this: 003211
and then move that fingering up three frets for the G. (i'm not sure that's 100% correct, but there's a minor in that G somewhere, and this is closer than the original tab. that interesting little added minor is a signature bit, and i've been trying to decode its mysteries for ages.) for the rest of the song, the F's, G's, and C's should all be barred.

  • in the bridge, the chords should look like this:
    G C G C
    Whoa yeah, oh boy
    Am G F C
Looks like we finally found the turning point
    G C G C
    Oh me, oh my
    Am G F G
Looks like it's time for me to kiss it goodbye, yeah kiss it goodbye

anyway, not only does this loser have no ear, he needs to work on his spelling and punctuation.

nevertheless, the song kicks ass and i think i sound pretty decent playing it. (yes, yes, i'll look into getting set up to record stuff and post it like [livejournal.com profile] boutell has been doing, but it's a bit difficult because there's limited space and a buttload of audio interference from fans and various electronics.)

damn, though. my Washburn has pretty low action, but this sure would be easier to play on a Tele with that sweet, sweet Fender action.

"My Cherie Amour", on the other hand, turns out to be absolutely impossible.

to keep my mind off Daddy-O's health issues, i've been playing a lot of guitar. 'With A Gun' has turned out to be a very absorbing problem. )

i just learned to play Steely Dan's "With A Gun". god damn, but that B♭ chord is a real bitch. especially switching to it from a barred Am.

but the song works really well for me. it's going to be a fun one to play.

also, while i've got blisters on my blisters, my voice is feeling really good today. more comfortable than it's been in a couple of years. mmmmm.

so a while back, when i borrowed money from a bunch of you (about which i have not, in fact, forgotten), i promised to assemble a CD as a thank you. today i started thinking about what songs to put on it and designed the front cover. here's what it looks like, sort of:

(the 'real' version has the text lined up better, but it was easier to mock up a fake than to scale the monster CMYK image down without the text getting ugly.)

i've been practicing about an hour a day, which is as long as my voice and my fledgling calluses hold out. it feels good. considering my historical patterns re: musical motivation, i'm not sure whether this means i'm doing better or worse, but at least i'm doing something.

a pitch perfect 30s style megaphone croon about Snakes on a Plane.

fabulous. i am so happy to live in a world where someone would even think of doing this.
