i've finally finished the lyrics for that song i was working on a few weeks ago, and i'm pretty happy with them overall. the melody for the verses needs some work, and i'd like to do a little more with the chord progression, but it is, essentially, a complete song.

update, 12 hours later: i decided the chorus was too repetitive, so i've written a variation for the third repetition.

something kind

i don't know how i got this old
it's all gone by so fast
just wishing for a moment
that i wished i could make last
when i set out down this highway
i had holes in both my shoes
i had the world to win
and just myself to lose

chorus:
i send signals out like semaphore
just searching for an open door
i don't know what this heart is for
my soul is sore
my soul is sore
i look but i can never find
a feeling i can get behind
ingenuous and unrefined
just something kind

i used to fall in love so hard
it always let me down
i'd get hung up on a moment
till the next one came around
but now my fear of falling
keeps me cut off from my muse
no inspiration
no emotion i can use

(repeat chorus)

bridge:
i want to fall
i want to fall
i want to fight till i break down this wailing wall
i am afraid
i am alive
i'm on the road but i've forgotten how to drive

TROMBONE SOLO

chorus, variation:
i send signals out like semaphore
just searching for an open door
i don't know what i'm waiting for
i wanted more
i wanted more
i'm lonely and i'm disinclined
to give it up and be resigned
and desperate for peace of mind
just something kind

i want to fall
i want to fall

Very, very nice. The line in the begninning about holes in your shoes reminds me of my song Vagabonds. (I posted it, but don't know if you saw it.)

Any way we are gonna get to hear ya sing it?

Very nice. You should be a musician. Actually this is the best song I've seen since the one your wrote about me. Which still fits. Hrm. Perhaps your actually an oracle.

BTW, do you use GarageBand on the Mac? It seems simultaneously cool and Duplo.

me? on a mac? surely you jest!

nah, i've got a little setup for recording on the PC, with a Shure SM-57, a Mackie 1202, and Audacity open-source audio editing software. i'll see if i can work myself up to setting it up this afternoon, but don't hold your breath. i've been having trouble so much as bathing lately.

I forced myself into the shower this morning. I'm almost proud of myself.

I love the chorus--and a trombone solo! Ha, that's great. Brings to mind Dolby's "Hyperactive!" (two lengthy trombone parts--intro & bridge, IIRC--that also happens to feature the word semaphore in the lyrics). Good work, will be interesting to see what chords you end up using. Think I'll go dust off Flat Earth when I'm done here. :)

ah, well, the TROMBONE SOLO is kind of a running joke from the golden days of talk.bizarre. i'm pretty sure there won't really be one.

there might, on the other hand, be a cello solo!

Oh wow, a real one or something simulated on guitar (Cathedral-esque) or keys? Have not had a dose of live cello since Kronos Quartet stopped by this god-forsaken town.

a real one! i know a couple of cellists in town, and i can practically *hear* the cello solo already -- i think it'd work really well with the melody.

Awesome, that'll be some good listening.
