fun fun fun
Sep. 5th, 2003 04:43 pmi like the new layout i picked for my lj partly because of the "free text" element that lets me add extra info on the righthand side of the screen. i was too dense to figure out how to add such things to the old layouts, but now that it's all automatic and stuff, i'm going to use that box to list what i'm reading at the moment, since some people appear to care about such things. and besides, it'll make me look so erudite when i finally get around to "The Great Human Diasporas" by Luigi Cavalli-Sforza. which has been sitting on a shelf for a couple of years now, silently mocking me as i pass it over in favor of the latest British police procedural.
in other news, my morning glories continue to twine in a gratifying manner, the ornamental chilies are turning all sorts of pretty colors, and i found a ladybug hanging out on my hibiscus. i hope it's really, really hungry, because i have more aphids than you can shake a stick at. i know! i went out on the balcony with a stick, but try as i might, i could not manage to shake. it was as though some strange otherworldly force prevented me. mysterious!
also, i took myself out to lunch again (bad), and when i went to Office Depot for envelopes (having finally used up the box of 500 C. bought when we first moved in together nine years ago) i succumbed to the lure of a $10 pen (bad bad) and a $20 DayRunner (bad bad bad). now, i did need a new planner, because i left mine in Colorado and it seems to have gone astray in the mail, since it's been nearly a month and i haven't got it yet. and really it wasn't that great a planner anyway. and the new one is cooler, and refillable, so over time it will eventually start to save me money over the other sort.
i really, really, really should not be spending money on non-essentials right now. but the pen is so nice and weighty and pleasing to my hand, and the planner is handsome and professional-looking and has a zipper and pockets and things...
and this is the sort of thing i do when i'm so filled with formless anxiety that i can't manage to concentrate on work. sigh.

on the one hand, i applaud the sentiment of this article about the whole Jessica Lynch BS-fest.
on the other hand, i'm kind of depressed that inelegant, mouth-foaming, self-important, sarcastic ranting seems to be rapidly superseding whatever used to pass for thoughtful, informed commentary in the US media. besides, i've found more entertaining rants than this one stuck in my cleavage in the process of discovering that not only do i pass the pencil test, i pass the pint glass test.
and no, you can't have a picture. go ask nj if he still has that xerox.
