last night's dinner: that chicken paprikash i was planning on for the other night, with egg noodles overcooked to mushiness just the way i like them.
this morning: awoken by tapping on the door at 9 a.m. stumbled around trying to find some sort of clothes to put on so i could answer it, but wasn't really awake enough. by the time i got to the door, no one was there. i was debating whether to stay up or not when the phone rang. it was warren, wanting to know if i could run the spare car keys down to the gas station where shirley had locked hers in the car. sure, no problem. i managed to make myself semi-presentable by the simple expedient of brushing my teeth and putting on a baseball cap to cover my sticking-in-all-directions hair, and headed on down. shirley insisted she owed me one, and i pointed out that this week alone she's taken me out to dinner one night, brought a slice of hot peach upside-down cake straight from the oven another, and yesterday afternoon brought me a whole pumpkin pie. she wouldn't be argued with, of course. i'm just kind of staggered by her volume of niceness. you don't meet people like this every day.
at home, my garage door opener wouldn't work, so i drove back down the hill and picked up a battery and my favorite comfort food -- stouffer's macaroni and cheese. i'm eating it now, overcooked and mushy with crispy brown bits around the edges, just the way i like it.
it rained last night. looks like we'll have more today. my hibiscus, incongruously, has bloomed again.
go figure.
