dwarfs and transvestites and ostrich

a trip to the MOMA with
naomi_traveller was just the thing. we made it out of the minimalism exhibit without actually bursting into hysterical laughter and spent quite a while in the Diane Arbus exhibit, which was really quite spectacular, complete with dwarfs and transvestites. my favorite shot in the whole exhibit was one of the last she ever took, from a picnic at a home for the mentally challenged. it pictures a young woman -- or at least she looks young, although it's sometimes hard to tell -- in a flowered dress, splayed ecstatically in a field of clover, her face turned up to the sky, with a broad smile on her face. i remember feeling just like that as a child. i mean, who can resist rolling in clover?
from there we headed over to a Chinese restaurant that i think was called the Rainbow Tea House, where we had PORK BUN, as well as Shanghai baby buns, egg drop soup, and basil ostrich. naomi cleverly pointed out that Basil Ostrich would be an excellent name for a literary character. all was delicious, so much so that we were forced to repeatedly tell the waiter how great it was. even the tea -- king's tea, whatever that is -- was wonderful.
and then i dropped her off at the BART station and came home.
if i ever wake up as a man, i'll have a tough time deciding whether to call myself "Basil Ostrich" or "Johnny Skylab".

Dec. 2nd, 2003 07:53 pmmy very old and dear friend
dglenn had his van burgled over the weekend and lost some expensive camera gear (some of which was borrowed) and some music equipment and instruments stolen, including a bass krumhorn that was willed to him by a good friend after his death. especially considering that glenn is in even worse financial shape than i am, this is a horrible thing and i hope everyone will send him their good wishes, and maybe their spare camera gear (and krumhorns!) as well; i've already offered him both of my 35mm cameras.
however, it is beyond my meager self-control not to find some humor in the situation. ( just imagine... )
