how the hell could anyone pull so much information out of such a simple song?

what i was looking for when i ran across that imposing document was the original chords to the song, because i could tell that the ones in my "beatles for easy guitar" songbook were in the wrong key. (i could pull the opening note to this song out of the air anywhere, anytime. it's an A.)

(i got to this point because i wrote a set of lyrics after responding to a comment [livejournal.com profile] dglenn made in someone else's lj, but i couldn't come up with a suitable melody or guitar line, so i was experimenting with other songs that have the sort of rhythym i was looking for and landed on "She's A Woman," which distracted me onto more from the Beatles songbook. [by the way, i discovered a missed transitional chord in their music for "Across The Universe" -- if you happen to have this crappy songbook, add a 022010 between the C and the Em more or less wherever they appear.])

i don't really know anything about music. i just lucked into a good ear, and i've always transposed by ear. but this time, my ear told me that this was a lousy transposition -- not only was it in the wrong key, the notes in Am just don't have the same balance as the notes in F#m. however, since F#m has the same shape as an E chord, i thought -- hm, i wonder what would happen if i transposed down two steps from the original, started on Em, and then capoed up two steps to get back to the original key?

turns out, that results in an easier set of chords without losing the sound of the originals. (i bet there's a word for this idea, but i don't know it.)

the result of all this experimentation? i've learned five new chords, made some progress on devising a strum pattern that's sufficiently interesting that one doesn't miss Lennon's beautiful but very difficult 12-beat rhythym guitar too much (oh, and you can tell he was playing a Rickenbacker on that song -- even had i not known that was his favored guitar at the time. that ringing tone is unmistakable), and made my fingers really sore.

can anyone tell me, though, what the "+" actually signifies on G+/C+/Bb+? i've never seen that particular designation before and i'm mystified as to what it's meant to convey.
