state of the merde
Aug. 2nd, 2006 12:14 pmi just applied for my first job in Austin. i'm a perfect fit for the position and i have twice as many years of experience as they specified, so i'm pretty sure i'll at least get a callback.
in other news, i'm doing okay here. i've met a bunch of cool people, eaten the best chimichanga of all time, and settled into
bquinlan and
valkyrie_kitten's house with a relative minimum of fuss. Rowan, the dog they're fostering, has taken a serious liking to me and follows me everywhere, which would be slightly less inconvenient if he didn't weigh about 75 lbs.; however, he really is a very nice dog, except for his oral fixation. (he's been less determined to get my hands into his mouth since Rox and i bought him a squeaky foot yesterday.) Ash, another of the dogs, has taken it upon himself to defend me from Rowan's irrational exuberance, which is very gentlemanly of him, if occasionally a bit loud. Abby the cat has finally decided i'm probably okay, although Caspian remains unconvinced.
the local mental health services agency turns out to be completely useless, but
bquinlan is trying to get me an appointment with their doctor for sometime in the next few days. my mood has been pretty good overall, although i've occasionally felt a bit overwhelmed by the amount of social activity. last night i cooked, which was universally received as an outstanding success despite the unfamiliar kitchen and implements and having to remember how to cook on a gas stove. (Rox's French bread was also delicious -- i'm very impressed with their bread machine, which delivers a wonderful crust.)
i can find my way back to the house from the highway, but i'm having a hard time remembering how to get out of the neighborhood for some reason. i expect i'll get the hang of it eventually.
in other news, the post office, in its infinite wisdom, sent the confirmation of address change to my old address after i'd already left, so they're not forwarding my mail. i've dropped them an email asking what i can do to confirm the change from here so i can actually get my mail.
Austin is much bigger than i expected. so far i have yet to see any part of it but suburban sprawl, but it seems quite nice (although the part i'm in is a bit overrun with shiny new retail developments, which is a little jarring after Pacifica's stuck-in-the-1950s air). the weather was unbearable the first couple of days but has cooled down to an almost tolerable level. (people complain about the humidity, but it's much less humid than Charlotte or DC, so i actually don't mind too much. though i do wish the temperature would drop below 90. it's apparently quite warm here year-round -- and here i was hoping i'd get a real fall, and have an excuse to wear some of my nice sweaters!) this is not only the farthest south i've ever lived, it may be the farthest south i've ever been -- i'm not sure whether i'm south of Carabelle Beach, FL, which was the previous record, and that was when i was 12 or so. i'm not sure how i failed to realize this earlier, but then, i have been a bit preoccupied lately.
between the three large dogs, the security system, and the extensive gun and knife collection (not to mention the fact that
bquinlan is armed to the teeth at all times), i may be the safest person in Austin.
i need to go take a shower and eat something, and perhaps investigate the state of the Quinlan BBQ. beer can chicken is on the agenda for sometime soon, if the grill allows.
