yesterday
naomi_traveller and i tried a Korean tofu soup place she'd heard about. the restaurant was a little hole in the wall place with heavy tables and benches carved from huge slabs of wood, with the table supports still irregularly shaped like tree trunks. the decor consisted entirely of newspaper clippings about the restaurant.
the soups have soft tofu and beef or seafood; we chose one with beef and kimchee and found it a bit too sour and spicy. (insert joke here about white people ordering soup with kimchee and then not liking that it's sour and spicy.) the bean paste pancakes we got for an appetizer were really, really delicious. as with any Korean restaurant, we got dishes of assorted tasty items including more kimchee, some spicy pickled cucumbers (i don't know if they also qualify as kimchee -- the spices were the same, anyway), potatoes, a tofu and parsley mixture, some bean sprouts that were also pickled in some way, and, um, something else, i think. oh, and delicious rice brought in a hot soapstone bowl, from which naomi enjoyed eating the crispy bits once we'd emptied it. the tea, alas, was lukewarm, served in plastic cups, and not of particularly high quality. but all that food cost us about $15, and we finished maybe half of it. i bet the beef soup without kimchee is fabulous. and mmmm, soft tofu.
